Today, many people assume that brides have always worn white wedding dresses as a symbol of purity and innocence. Surprisingly, that tradition is relatively recent.

Queen Victoria Changed Bridal Fashion
Everything changed in 1840 when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert.
Her choice of a white satin gown adorned with Honiton lace and orange blossoms captured the public's imagination. Newspapers and illustrations spread the image throughout Britain and beyond, inspiring women to imitate the young queen.
At the time, white fabric was expensive and impractical. Choosing a white gown demonstrated wealth because it suggested the bride could afford a dress that might never be worn again.
About a decade later, Godey's Lady's Book declared white to be the most fitting color for brides, helping to cement the trend in popular culture.
Today, many people believe white symbolizes purity, but historically, it was more closely associated with status and royal influence.
Wedding Dresses Around the World
While white dominates many Western weddings today, bridal traditions vary around the globe.
- In China, red symbolizes luck, joy, and prosperity.
- In India, brides often wear red or red-and-white ensembles.
- In Japan, brides may wear colorful kimonos or multiple outfit changes throughout the celebration.
- In parts of Africa and the Middle East, vibrant colors and elaborate textiles remain important expressions of culture and family heritage.
These traditions remind us that there has never been a single "correct" color for a wedding dress.

The white wedding dress remains one of the most enduring wedding traditions, but its history may not be what many people expect.
Far from representing purity alone, white wedding gowns became popular because one influential queen chose to wear one on her wedding day.
